It was not my plan to take many photos - just a few snapshots, which I would email to friends with a short report of my impressions. In the end, I took about 500 photos that spanned the period from opening day to the final hours when only a few iron bases remained, waiting to be carted away, melted down and recycled. I was in the park everyday at all hours on a bicycle, taking photographs with a point-and-shoot digital camera. The reports are reproduced here exactly as they were emailed to friends, mostly written in a rush, and sometimes transmitted at three in the morning. They were meant to be short and quick, off-the-cuff impressions - in a sense, just notes to myself. The installation lasted two weeks. Dismantling took almost another two. In the end I was exhausted but fortunate to have had a very personal and special experience of Jeanne-Claude and Christo's work of art. Now, as I ride through the park on my daily bike commute, I miss them and wonder what happened to the man with the Buddha shrine who lived in the tunnel. |
